Birdie is the founder and editor of Mountainair Times, an independent local publication dedicated to the people, history, culture, and future of Mountainair and the surrounding communities.
An award-winning New Mexico journalist, Birdie previously worked as the arts and entertainment writer for the Las Vegas Optic. Her reporting has introduced readers to many of the artists, musicians, community leaders, and fascinating characters who contribute to the state’s distinctive cultural life. Over the years, she has received numerous awards for her coverage of New Mexico’s arts, communities, and political landscape.
Birdie also founded Gallinas, a regional magazine focused on the arts, culture, people, and community of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The magazine grew from her belief that local stories matter, and that the people who shape a community deserve thoughtful, engaging coverage.
She is also the author of My Tiny Vegas, a collection of essays about Las Vegas, New Mexico. Through personal observations and stories about the city’s people, places, and singular character, the book celebrates the humor, complexity, and everyday experiences that make a small New Mexico community unforgettable.
As a property owner in Mountainair, Birdie has a personal stake in the town and its future. She created Mountainair Times to help residents stay informed, preserve the region’s remarkable stories, and celebrate the people working to make Mountainair an even stronger community.
As editor, Birdie brings journalistic experience, curiosity, and a genuine affection for local storytelling to every issue. Her goal is to make Mountainair Times a lively and trusted home for local news, interviews, photographs, historical features, and the many voices of Mountainair and the surrounding area.
